My mother was nuts a memoir6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() He was booking hotel and flight reservations but neglecting to cancel them-something my older brother, Rajiv, discovered only after he began to monitor my father’s bank accounts. For example, he had always been careful with his money, a consequence of an impoverished childhood, but now he was bouncing checks. Since their arrival, I had come to suspect that his symptoms were not the usual age-related cognitive changes, even if he kept saying they were. He and my mother had moved to Long Island, where my brother and I lived, several months earlier. “Well, no one can remember everything,” he muttered. He thought for a moment, then sniffed defiantly as my point came across. ![]() “So what did you have for lunch?” I asked, staring ahead. Any lapses, he had been insisting, were normal for a man of his age. “Because your memory is getting worse,” I answered. ![]() We were sitting in the waiting room of the same neurology practice that was treating my mother’s Parkinson’s disease when my father asked me, perhaps for the third time, “Why am I here?” Introduction: They Used to Call Me Topper Here & Now‘s Deepa Fernandes speaks with author and cardiologist Sandeep Jauhar about his new book “ My Father’s Brain: Life in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s.” It intertwines information about the disease and how it’s treated with his own family’s story of coping when his father developed Alzheimer’s.īook excerpt: ‘My Father’s Brain: Life in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s’ ![]()

Radical happiness lynne segal6/8/2023 ![]() ![]() This was exactly the shared joy that other father of sociology, Max Weber, saw as disappearing with the advent of capitalism, forever at odds with its dour individualising principles – and never more so than now, when it’s ever harder to escape that never-ending project of self-improvement. ![]() The father of sociology, Émile Durkheim, noted the role of public festivals in affirming community belonging, generating forms of “collective effervescence”. It’s a moment when we can escape that gloomy tyrant – ourselves – so often brooding over our own shortcomings or sense of isolation. ![]() This explains joy’s traditional ties with something we feel is larger than ourselves, perhaps our teams winning at football, or other collective excitements. We may discern it, perhaps hovering on the horizon of possibilities, if often in events we feel we are missing out on.įor what is distinctive about joy, as I argue in my book ‘Radical Happiness’, is that it can break down distances between people, bringing us together – at least with those able to share the same delight. ![]() But where is joy? Unlike happiness, joy is a word we don’t use much today. There is so much official talk (and number crunching) about happiness and well-eing nowadays. ![]()

Jacques made food a character in these books as well as a ritual of familiarity or comfort or victory. ![]() This particular mantra of meals comes from the Brian Jacques Redwall series books I loved as a kid, a 22-novel world revolving around Redwall Abbey, its charming, medieval woodland characters, their adventures, and everything they ate along the way. Ji packer books6/7/2023 ![]() Whether he was the Solomon of history or someone impersonating him-not to deceive but to make points in the most effective way-we do not know. As his official testimonial or third-person testimony (it might be either) in 12:10 shows, this man took his instructional task very seriously and labored to communicate memorably. ![]() I see him as a reflective senior citizen, a public teacher of wisdom, something of a stylist and wordsmith. That is how the writer, who called himself Qohelet-Hebrew for “Gatherer,” a title that in Greek became Ecclesiastes, the “Assembly-man”-strikes me. Should people raise their eyebrows and ask why, I give them two reasons.įirst, it is a special pleasure to read an author with whom one resonates. When asked which Bible book is my favorite, I say Ecclesiastes. Finding out how people experience Scripture-especially those who write books about the Bible-is a natural interest to us. Audre lorde essays6/7/2023 ![]() To give witness: “What are the words you do not yet have? What do you need to say? What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day and attempt to make your own, until you will sicken and die of them, still in silence?” Political antagonists tried, for instance, to discredit her among black students by announcing her sexuality, and she decided: “The only way you can head people off from using who you are against you is to be honest and open first, to talk about yourself before they talk about you.” Over and over again, in the essays, speeches and poems collected in Your Silence Will Not Protect You, Lorde emphasises how important it is to speak up. ![]() Black, lesbian and feminist the child of immigrant parents poet and essayist, writer and activist, Lorde knew about harbouring multitudes. But she was born in 1934, published her first book of poetry in 1968, and died in 1992. The house on mango street house6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Since its publication in 1984, The House on Mango Street has become required reading in schools and universities across the country. When most of us picked up the novel, we were still learning about things like metaphor, personification, and imagery in our English classes. Sometimes funny, and often deeply profound, The House on Mango Street is a story about growing up, finding out where you come from, where you belong, and who you want to be. ![]() The book is narrated by a Latina teenager, Esperanza Cordero, and tells the story of one year of her life on Mango Street, in a Chicago barrio.
